The Greater Birmingham Humane Society’s Humane Education Program reaches children of all ages. Each presentation focuses on different topics that are age appropriate. Presentations typically last 30-60 minutes and engage children in high interest motivational activities that include:
- Interactive Learning
- Literature Based Discussions
- Hands-On Activities
- Follow-up activities that reinforce concepts taught in the presentation
We are pleased to present our specially-written curriculum that is the first of its kind in Alabama. It has been designed to meet the Alabama Course of Study objectives. This means that each lesson taught can be incorporated directly into all major content areas, including math, science, social studies, and language arts. The lessons are based on compassion, respect and responsible treatment of all living things. They are particularly useful for schools that are implementing character education programs.
Ages/Group Sizes We work with Pre-school age students and older. We prefer to work with groups of 50 or less. Multiple presentations per day are O.K.
Groups We Work With Public and private schools (Pre-School-12 Grade), Scout Troops, Religious youth groups, Libraries, at Risk Juvenile facilities and many others.
Shelter Tours Shelter Tours are available and include a guided walking tour of our shelter at our Snow Drive location. A tour is approximately 45 minutes in length and includes follow-up activities.
Scheduling You can schedule over the phone, by calling Catherine Stewart at (205) 397-8536. For your convenience you can also schedule online.
"Teaching children to be kind to every living creature is just as essential in the formation of character as are the rudiments of grammar in formal education.” Dr. Herbert Phillips, 1883 Founder of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society
