The Educated Dog Program
What is the Educated Dog Program?
The Greater Birmingham Humane Society's Educated Dog Program offers a variety of classes to fit each individual's exact needs. Classes range from the most basic behavior training sessions to very in-depth one-on-one lessons.
We offer free behavior evaluations to help you better understand what is going on inside your dog's mind. Our program is very different from mainstream obedience training. GBHS Training Specialist, Benjamin Frederick, will help you learn to work with your dog off-leash, as well as on-leash. He realizes that the reality of the matter is no one can train your dog for you and return it to you as a "trained dog".
The training of your dog is a group effort and you are an essential part of the equation. Benjamin will spend most of his time working with you. He will teach you leash handling skills, and how to correct bad behavior in a stable balanced manner. We do not use any outside reinforcements, such as pinch chains, shock collars, or any other form of intimidation. We also do not use bribes, such as food treats or clickers. The main goal of our program is for you and your dog to have a great, stress free relationship. Once the training is complete, your dog will listen to you the first time you ask him to do something for you, and will stop trying to run over your authority.
